As the economy shrinks, school budgets are slashed, and classroom sizes grow, students need VTS more than ever. Despite the many challenges, in 2010, more than 500 new teachers, reaching over 75,000 students, began VTS programs. We want to keep the momentum going, until every school waiting has a VTS program of their own. We can’t do that without you. Please consider making a donation today.
A fourth grade teacher recently wrote to us, “During my very first lesson, I could see right away that VTS changed to entire social dynamic of my classroom…every child felt comfortable enough to express his or her opinion about the painting on the screen on that very first day. Every student! I have seen the effects carry over into my classroom teaching.”
Think of the feeling you get from a VTS discussion: a new sense of depth, of new pathways opening in your mind, that what you thought at the beginning of the discussion has changed, or has refined into something more complicated, more thorough. Our children need VTS to develop their creative abilities, to stretch their thinking skills, so that they may grow up to become adults who think, and consider, before they act. So that they create a society that values literacy in the arts, and beyond.
Another teacher said: “At the beginning of the school year, the kids told me that they had never had a discussion before. But having VTS discussions to focus on helped them to pull their thoughts together. They could consider their fellow students’ ideas. Students who were either too hyper to be attentive, or too shy to speak freely began to participate in discussions with really in-depth ideas.”
Now is the time to make a difference. Help bring VTS teaching materials and website resources to schools who need them.
